The Scarlet Loser: The ABC’s of the Nancy Mace

Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina is the unintentionally hilarious gift that keeps on giving. We’ve written about her pro-abortion shenanigans more than once. Most recently, Mace is reveling in the latest round of media attention she’s getting – pretending to be a martyr after willingly casting her vote against former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Last night, Mace strolled into a caucus meeting with a big red “A” on her t-shirt. From the report at The Hill:

“Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) donned a red “A” on her shirt Tuesday after her vote to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) left her feeling “demonized” on Capitol Hill, she said.

“I’m wearing the scarlet letter after the week that I just had, last week, being a woman up here and being demonized for my vote and for my voice,” Mace told reporters, apparently referencing the 19th century novel in which the protagonist was condemned to wear a red “A” — a “scarlet letter” — after becoming pregnant out of wedlock.

“I’m here to let the rest of the world know and the country know: I’m on the side of the people. I’m not on the side of the establishment,” Mace continued. “And I’m going to do the right thing every single time, no matter the consequences, because I don’t answer to anybody in D.C.; I don’t answer to anyone in Washington. I only answer to the people.”

This could be seen as brave if it weren’t so patently ridiculous – she didn’t vote to remove McCarthy for “conservative” reasons. She did it because McCarthy wouldn’t move further left on “women’s healthcare issues” (read: abortion).

What exactly does the “A” on her shirt mean? In the classic American novel The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the main character Hester Prynne is forced to wear a large, scarlet letter “A” as a symbol of her adultery and shame within her Puritan community in 17th century Boston.

Seems apt, correct? Wrong – because nothing about this stunt aligns with the spirit of the novel. Mace wasn’t forced to wear it, she’s clearly not ashamed of it, and she’s not being shamed for being indecent— she’s being mocked for absurd use of a metaphor. Or maybe she just really liked that one Emma Stone movie and thought she’d look cool doing it?

But we have others guesses as to what the “A” on her shit actually means:

ABORTION – It’s the one thing she won’t shut up about and has railed against the GOP numerous times on the issue. Despite positioning herself as a pro-life voice, she’s anything but – and her voting record proves it.

ATTENTION – She’s constantly chasing it. Truly nothing else explains this bizarre self-assigned martyr complex, which is almost as lame as announcing to your friends what your new nickname is going to be.

ACCOMPLISHED – Not really, though good for her for being the first female graduate from The Citadel (credit where it’s due.)

ADOLESCENT – Like her stupid joke at the National Prayer Breakfast.

ANNOYING – Yes. Speaks for itself.

Yet, among the choices we have to explain away Mace’s latest episode of self-serving dramatics, perhaps the best way to describe her is astoundingly absurd and absolutely asinine in her ability to accommodate abortion access across America.

She’s more than earned her place among Biden’s Favorite Republicans, and we look forward to adding another “A” to her repertoire: ABSENT from Congress.
