GUEST POST: A daunting pro-abortion ballot initiative threatens Arizona voters this November, but The Pro-Life Generation is determined to thwart it. When Arizona for Abortion Access submitted 240 boxes of petitions, many feared the worst. How could they have filled so many boxes? As they began scanning, it became apparent—some boxes contained as few as 20 petitions while others were entirely empty. What was once 240 boxes dwindled to just 70. Their bold claim of over 800,000 “valid” signatures suddenly seemed pretty hollow.
Students for Life of America (SFLA) in collaboration with Arizona Right to Life, committed ourselves to safeguard precious pre-born lives and fight back. During our Decline to Sign campaign, we were confronted with rampant misinformation. Petitioners misrepresented the proposed law’s effects, using fear tactics such as claiming that “abortion will be illegal if you don’t sign this petition” or suggesting that women would die without the referendum. They falsely claimed the new law would ban late-term abortions, with one person even asserting that it would only permit abortions before fetal pain could be felt.
In reality, this initiative seeks to establish unrestricted abortion access in Arizona, including for minors without parental consent. It would allow any medical professional—whether a doctor, chiropractor, optometrist, or even a veterinarian—to allow for an abortion after fetal viability, and it would fund abortions through taxpayer dollars.
One thing has become apparent – Arizona for Abortion Access was dishonest throughout the entire process and their sloppiness could be our victory. Planned Parenthood dumped millions of dollars into this initiative, and their efforts could be in vain.
The Pro-Life Generation has volunteered our time over the past seven months to educate voters and protect life. This past week has shown that we do not need the monetary incentive to show up for the pre-born as every person who is invalidating signatures is not doing it because of money, but because of something far more precious: conviction.
